Activities

It’s guaranteed: your child will never be bored at YMCA Camp Pinewood. Counselors are specifically trained to give age-appropriate instruction in every one of the activities you see below.

What's it like?
Check out a typical day at camp.

Swimming -- even if your child doesn’t know how to swim yet, he or she can learn at camp. All lifeguards are certified by the YMCA or American Red Cross, and give lessons in the sectioned swim area of Lake Echo, ranging from zero depth at water’s edge to only 5 feet. More experienced swimmers make daily use of the floating deck and jumping platform.

Ropes courses – low, intermediate and high ropes courses build coordination, confidence and teamwork. All courses combined total 27 elements, including a zip line on the 28-foot high-ropes circuit. Safety is paramount; all courses are inspected and certified.

Mountain biking – certified counselors lead campers on challenging rides through the surrounding Manistee National Forest

Archery – certified instructors lead one of the camp’s most popular activities, also one of the best for developing hand-eye coordination.

Nature hikes – campers go off-trail to learn plant and animal identification, and to master outdoor skills like building a fire and shelter. Small groups can also camp overnight with their counselors a short distance from the main camp at our “wilderness” site.

Fishing – Lake Echo is home to all varieties of sunfish, perch and largemouth bass. Most campers don’t even need to leave the dock to catch and release.

Climbing – kids can?t wait to master the 24-foot tower?s multiple routes to the top.

Boating – the YMCA Camp Pinewood fleet includes sea kayaks, sunfish, canoes, rowboats, paddleboats, fun bugs and funyaks. No matter what the craft, every boater leaves shore with a life vest and supervision. Remote canoe and kayak trips are also available (see below).

Trips – You can sign up your child for short canoe trips on the Pierre-Marquette, White, Muskegon rivers. Or chose 1-3 day trips: kayaking and backpacking through the Manistee National Forest, or beach trips on Lake Michigan. Once you register for camp, you’ll receive a list of trips that are available during your week(s).

Arts and crafts – inside activities include mask making, bead and leatherwork, clay crafting and tie-dyeing.

Drama and games – music and drama instruction help campers create their own entertainment, including “Pinewood Idol.” Capture the flag, soccer, volleyball, Frisbee golf and sock wars are some of the most popular games. There are campfires, of course, and Carnival Night, which features game booths created by each cabin (as well as the wildly popular counselor dunk).
